Amaryllis Care

  • Place your potted Amaryllis in a warm spot. They do prefer a 70-75 degree environment, preferably near a bright warm window with indirect light. While growing if the plant starts to lean toward the light just turn the pot regularly to ensure straight stems.

  • • Water weekly OR when the top 1 inch of soil is dry. It is important to not over water as the bulb could rot.

    • Once your Amaryllis blooms make sure to remove it from direct sun as the blooms will last a bit longer. When the blooms fade, cut off the tubular flower stems 2 inches above the bulb leaving the foliage to continue growing.

  • You can SAVE your bulb to rebloom next year! After your Amaryllis has stopped blooming place it in a sunny window and continue to water and begin fertilizing it every month to fortify the bulb for the next round of forcing. In May (after frost has passed) set the container outside and continue to water for the remainder of summer. Before the first frost in the fall bring the Amaryllis indoors and stop watering and allow the bulb to completely dry out. Store it in a cool dark place and allow foliage to wither before trimming it off. Amaryllis need a dormant period. About 6-8 weeks before you want the Amaryllis to flower again bring it into a sunny spot and resume watering your Amaryllis to enjoy again.

  • Plant your individual Amaryllis bulb in a 6-7 inch wide pot. If there is not a drainage hole you can place loose rocks in the bottom. Dampen potting soil and place in bottom half of pot. Place the bulb on top with roots fanned out and fill in the soil around the bulb. Leave 1/2 to 1/3 of the bulb uncovered. Water once right after potting then sparingly until you see the tip of the bud appear. Then you can water regularly allowing soil to dry to the touch between watering. Follow remaining instructions above.
